Full Circle…

“Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaida, and a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children.”

I must admit it was like watching things come full circle last night as those words came from President Obama’s lips. I was one of the many Americans who watch the events of September 11th live on television. I can remember like it was yesterday…my mother running in my room telling me to wake up and watch history. The confusing feeling watching what we thought was an accident, turn into a full on terrorist attack when a second plane hit the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

I was off a half day for ISTEP testing and had to report 5th period for an AP History Exam. When we got to class we all just sat in silence watching history shape itself in front of our eyes. None of could have imagined the towers collapsing and the whole world stopping. I can remember the eerie quiet feeling outside when you looked to the sky and saw nothing… all flights had been grounded. I can remember the heighten sense of patriotic pride when we heard of the brave souls on Flight 93 who risked there lives to save strangers in Washington.

Last night I felt some of that pride again. We’re smart enough to know killing Osama bin Laden, will not end terrorism in the world, but it did bring some sense of closure.

“On nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to al-Qaida’s terror: Justice has been done.”

Well said Mr. President. Well said.
